investの基本概念はuse money to buy something for a profitで、何か利益を得ようと金や労力をつぎ込むことです。日本語の「投資」と同じような使い方もできます。
まずは、基本的なニュアンスを見ましょう。
He invested ten million yen in china government bonds. 彼は中国国債に1000万円を投資した。
次にお金をかけるというニュアンスで、
Parents invest all their money in educating their children in china. 中国では親は子供を教育するのに全財産をかける。
お金の部分はもちろんですが、労力を使うときでもinvestは結構使われるので、わざと使う練習をするとよいですね。
